About Academy Of Music

At Academy of Music, we believe learning to play an instrument should be joyful, convenient, and inspiring. For over three decades, we’ve been helping students of all ages discover the life-changing benefits of music – from building confidence and discipline to creating memories that last a lifetime. Whether lessons take place in your home, in one of our teachers’ studios, or online, our goal is to make music education accessible, engaging, and rewarding.

Our Story

Founded in 1990 by Shawn and Donna Coughlin, Academy of Music began as an in-home piano and guitar lesson service in Winnipeg. Shawn’s inspiration came from his own childhood – watching his brother’s guitar teacher come to their home and experiencing firsthand how convenient and motivating that was.

From day one, Shawn understood the advantages of in-home instruction: students learn on their own instrument, teachers can tailor guidance to the student’s setup, and parents enjoy the convenience of not having to travel.

Over the years, our journey has been marked by important milestones:

  • 1990: Launched in-home piano and guitar lessons in Winnipeg

  • 1996: Opened our first studio and sales location on St. Matthews Ave., adding piano reconditioning and sales

  • 2005: Expanded to include violin, drums, ukulele, singing, and began offering lessons at select private schools

  • 2020: Celebrated 30 years in business, moved to 51 St. Anne’s Rd., became Manitoba’s authorized Kawai piano dealer, and launched online lessons plus more instrument offerings, including all string, brass, and woodwind instruments

  • 2024: Expanded in-home and studio lessons to Edmonton
